Description
I’m well known for my Twin Cities map prints. As a response to “Operation Metro Surge,” I took a portion of my Twin Cities map, printed it, and recorded stories on it in red ink.
What’s written comes from recent news reporting, as well as stories shared with me by people I know personally about ICE activity in the Twin Cities. I used red ink because of its stark opposition to my standard, calming greens and blues.
It’s difficult to look at and hard to read, because the information itself is difficult. This is what it feels like to live through this occupation. This is what it’s like to hear another story of violence or blatant disregard for the constitution: confusion first, then disbelief. Did that really happen? How can this be real?
The text on this map represents only a small sampling of what I collected. Each red mark also stands in for countless stories that were never reported, recorded, or witnessed. Moments that disappeared without documentation.
This map is ugly. I hate it. Just like I hate what ICE has done. And still, underneath it is our beautiful city. A place I’m deeply proud of, especially for how people here continue to take care of one another and resist, quietly and fiercely, in the face of all of this.
One hundred percent of the profits from this piece will be donated to mutual aid supporting families currently living in hiding.
Take care and be safe!
